Year 3 Autumn Term

The Stone Age - Autumn 1

(Stone Age Britain)

The children will be introduced to this new topic and a range of vocabulary through a stimulating version of the classic game bingo! They will learn that children have not always had the same rights as they do today. At the start of each academic year we create new class charters, which is a set of expectations or promises that children and teachers have agreed on. They are created to help children understand that they have certain rights in the classroom. These rights are important, as they help to keep them safe and happy while they receive their education. Class charters also help children to develop a sense of responsibility, as they have to do their part in keeping the classroom fair for everyone.

In English, we will be reading and discussing the text ‘Stone Age Boy’. This text will transport the pupils back into the Stone Age period, just as it does the little boy in the text!  One day a boy is walking along when he trips, stumbles and falls... into the Stone Age! He meets a girl his own age and her tribe, and learns all about their way of life. He watches them make tools, clothes and weapons. He sees how they hunt, fish, cook, celebrate - and even how they paint on the walls of caves. But when a furious cave bear attacks, he wakes up back in his own time where everyone tells him it was only a dream. But was it? We will be exposed to new vocabulary such as; chipping, roasting and baking and will learn the meaning of these words and apply them in our own writing.

In history lessons, we will look at how people lived in the Stone Age and discover the impact the Stone Age period had upon life today. We will learn the term ‘chronological’ and look at significant events in British history. We will learn about the three phases of the Stone Age, including Palaeolithic, and Neolithic stone age. It is important that they understand that this is the same Britain that we live in today, just a different time period.

In art lessons, we will be taken on a virtual tour to look at art from the past and a range of cave paintings. We will explore different techniques to make our own cave style drawings.

By the end of this unit, the children should be able to recall key information about the Stone Age including important facts and dates. They will understand the impact this era has had on life today. They will be able to create their own narrative work around the Stone Age and they will be able to create a non-fiction text that details all the key information they have learnt.
