UNICEF Rights Respecting Award

At Thornton Primary School we have achieved the Level 1 UNICEF Rights Respecting Award. Our School Council and our staff have helped to create an action plan for the whole school.

In 1989, governments worldwide promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential and apply to every child under the age of 18. Please see the links below for more information on the Convention.

Each class has made a Class Charter of their rights and actions, which our School Council have monitored and given feedback to classes. Also some children attended teacher's planning sessions to input into the school's curriculum and activities.

As part of our curriculum, children also learn their Rights in a number of subjects; our PSHE lessons, English lessons, Religious Education and History lessons.

Mrs Biddle Rawbone and Ms Bibi have both attended 'Achieving Gold' Rights Respecting Training. We hope to be accredited as a Gold Rights Respecting school in the next 12-18 months.

Please look at the video links below.

In the Autumn Term, as part of their music lessons, the whole school has learnt the song words to the song 'We've got Rights' which reinforces children's rights. We've got rights song
